A permanent link, otherwise known as a permalink, is an essential part of a website. It is a common feature of websites that consistently publish, update, and remove content. A permalink is a URL that directs a visitor to a specific web page, blog post, or digital media on your website. It is primarily used for blogging services where the web page is often temporarily available at a different address.

How Does it Work? 

Think of permalink as a direct address of web content. Although it is permanent, permalinks provide an alternate web address for every content seen on the home page. It can be relocated to another page once the content is archived. 

Take this as an example; a blog article is made accessible either at the homepage or featured page of the website. Posting new content on the homepage will result in more visibility and higher traffic. Once a new blog is posted, the older one is removed from the featured page and saved at a permalink. In this way, a visitor may still access older content.

           #1 Simple and Enticing Permalinks

Avoid creating incomprehensible permalinks made by a string of letters, numbers, and characters. Make it short, sensible, accurate, and attractive. 

Although an IP address on permalink works well in directing visitors to specific content, such URL is not SEO-friendly since it is just a series of random numbers. It is hard to remember and not professional looking. An effective permalink contains relevant words to the content and is understandable.

           #2 Use Keywords 

Add keywords in the permalink to optimize the web page. The keywords should be at the beginning of the URL. Visitors will immediately understand and recognize the content of the webpage in this manner.

However, beware of overusing and stuffing keywords in the URL. Use only the necessary keywords which search engines automatically recognize.

           #3 Use Hyphens

Do not string the keywords when creating a URL. Separate each keyword by using a hyphen. Doing so makes it easier for the visitor to read the URL. Though underscores are useable to separate words, it is not as effective as hyphens. Keywords connected with underscores are read as one word, whereas hyphen is seen as spaces.
